Terminology
• What is WiFi?
WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) is an up-and-coming and ever-more-popular technology used to wirelessly connect computers to networks or ensure high-speed wireless access to the Internet.
• What is an Access Point (AP)?
An Access Point is a WiFi network radio transmitter and receiver that maintains the connection between the user's radio adapter (WiFi adapter) and the network.
• What is Hotspot?
Hotspot is an Internet access network that operates on the basis of the WiFi technology and may be deployed on a certain territory (e.g., in a hotel, airport, cafe, restaurant, or business center). A hotspot can encompass several access points connected to a single network. The user is free to move within the hotspot area.
• What is SSID (ESSID), a.k.a. Service Set IDentifier?
It is the WiFi network identifier (the network's name) that makes it possible to distinguish between various networks. A network with one identifier as a rule has the same parameters. The identifier of our network is HOTNET.
Service parameters and connection quality
• What kind of connection and data transfer speeds does HOTNET offer?
The data transfer speed may reach up to 256 kbps, which is more than enough to download web pages, check email, and use other Internet resources.
• How close does the user have to be to the access point to have a stable connection?
Outside, the operation radius is approximately 100-300 meters. Inside, it depends on the composition of the walls and is usually less than 100 meters.
Connection
• What is required to use the service?
Required equipment -
PC (desktop or laptop) or PPC (pocket computer)
-
Wireless adapter (WLAN adapter operating on the 802.11b or g standard).
It is also required that users register (on the service website: www.hotnet.az).
• What is required to use the service?
If your computer carries the WiFi or Intel® Centrino™ logo or the user's manual of your PPC (PDA) or PC says it supports the IEEE 802.11b/g standards, then your device supports the WiFi technology and you do not need any additional devices.
• What kind of equipment is required to access HOTNET?
If your computer does not support WiFi, to connect you will need to buy a WiFi adapter and install the software it comes with. A WiFi adapter can be implemented in the form of a PCI, a card that goes into the PCMCIA slot of your laptop (PC Card), or an external device to be connected to the USB port of your computer or the Ethernet port (WLAN-Ethernet-adapter).
• How will I know I’m connected?
Once your operational system is configured, the wireless adapter of your device should find the HOTNET wireless network. It occurs automatically if your wireless adapter is on. Most laptops (using Windows XP) will show an icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. You can determine the connection quality and signal strength by looking at the icon (a screen with a red slash over it means that no wireless connection is unavailable).
• I have connected to the HOTNET wireless network but am unable to work with Internet applications (email, ICQ, etc.).
Start your browser (navigator), e.g., Microsoft Internet Explorer, and you will be automatically redirected to the start page when you request any URL. If authorization is successful, you will be able to access Internet resources.
• I have not been redirected automatically. Which setting do I need to adjust manually?
1.Go to Windows Settings and select the following:
• Control panel > Network > Wireless connection > General.
• Select "Automatically assign IP and DNS parameters" in the TCP/IP settings;
2. Start your browser and enter any URL.
If this does not solve your problem check your Internet browser settings. Go to the Properties menu (for Internet Explorer), select Connections, and make sure that no additional connections are used to access the Internet. Open the LAN Settings and deselect both "Use a proxy-server" and "Use automatic settings scenarios".
Problems
• Unable to find the network?
Possible reasons:
• Your WiFi-adapter is not on or defective
• No coverage is available in this area
• Signal strength is insufficient (there is coverage but the signal is too weak – this can be checked in Connection Properties)
You can send a request for HOTNET coverage for your home or give us feedback on network performance at a certain address.
If none of the above applies, please call our Customer Support Service at
phone +994 12 596 49 49.
• Authorization fails (username and/or password rejected).
If you have just registered, wait for 5-15 minutes. Your authorization data should be available for use after that.
Otherwise, call our Customer Support Service at +994 12 596 49 49. Be prepared to provide your account number and authorization error code.
Aspects of use
• How can I switch between local network and HOTNETi connections?
Windows 2000 and Windows XP determine which of the network interfaces is active and use it automatically. Other operatiingl systems may require that you switch manually. Refer to your operating system manual for more details.
• Sometimes the operating speed of the network varies. Why?
The HOTNET network ensures a high speed of connection between your PC or PPC and the Internet even when one access point is simultaneously supporting several users. Often the server that you are connected to determines the speed. Interference can also affect access speed.
• Can I use the wireless LAN card of my company or my home network the way I do in the HOTNET network?
Yes, depending on your card. Many WLAN adapters support several user profiles, each of which enables you to connect to various networks.
To configure your profiles, please use the software that came with your laptop or PDA.
• Will WiFi interfere with the operation of other wireless devices?
As a rule, it will not. Disturbances may occur between WiFi and Bluetooth devices because both technologies use frequencies that overlap within the range of 2.4 GHz: 2400-2483.5 MHz.
WiFi devices do not interfere with cellular phones, radio phones (except for some rare American models), remote controls, etc.
• Does it pose any health risk?
WiFi has not been identified as hazardous. The capacity of WiFi transmitters does not exceed 100 mW. This is the strength of an access point (the user's adapter is usually less powerful), and it is approximately 10 times less than that of a cellular telephone, which has never been proven to be harmful to human beings.
• Why can I not connect using the 802.11a standard?
This standard is not used for client connections because it uses a different frequency range (5.2 GHz). In the Azerbaijan Republic, as a rule, the 2.4 GHz range is used. The 802.11a standard is more popular in the US.
Aspects of use Nokia E65
• Can I use Internet via Nokia E65?
Yes, you can – telephone is equipped with inbuilt Internet browser. To get access to Internet through HOTNET you should register as a user and replenish the balance of your personal account as per instructions specified on www.hotnet.az.
• What is the duration of the battery charge when using WiFi?
While Wi-Fi adapter is in use energy consumption from storage battery is well intensive; therefore we do recommend to activate it only when needed, rather than to hold it switched-on constantly. In particular, we recommend to activate “On Call” parameter of “SIP parameters” - > “Registration” settings – in that case the network registration shall be done only upon the call through HOTNET. Upon completion of connections through HOTNET we recommend to disconnect from the network. |
